Many of our clients have been asking us lately about how to increase the value of their homes. One of the most demanded items by homebuyers is a home with a remodeled kitchen. We decided to put this to the test with our own home and see if the improvements were worth it to us. We shopped long and hard to find quality products at reasonable prices. This proved to be the biggest challenge for us as prices for countertops fluctuated so much from store to store and vendor-to-vendor.
Upgraded countertops are all the rage these days with so many options available. You have options ranging from quartz, to granite, to butcher block, to concrete, and also stainless steel just to name a few. Prices for countertops can range just over $1,000 dollars to up to $7,000 depending on the product and size of your counters. We started looking in the big home improvement stores and those were estimating between $5,500 and $6,500 for granite. That was not exactly the price range we were looking for. We ended up going with a granite vendor that was referred to us through a friend and was 60% cheaper than the two big home improvement stores! We paid $2,400 installed, which was a great price for us, and included a new kitchen sink!
Kitchen Remodel To Increase Your Homes Value
The one thing to expect when you are getting new countertops installed is the removal of the old ones. Most contractors charge clients a few hundred dollars to remove the old ones. With the exception of removing the sink, which consists of disconnecting the hot and cold water supply lines, and removing the mounting bracket, it should only take about 15 minutes. We actually got a new under mounted sink with the countertops so we didn’t even hassle with the old sink. Removing the old countertops yourself will save you hundreds of dollars.
What we realized once the granite was installed was the old bisque color appliances looked terrible next to the new polished granite. So we did some research and found a great deal by Frigidaire. The deal was for a new stainless steel refrigerator, stove, microwave, and dishwasher. The cost of the combo deal was just under $2,000 for all three appliances. What you should know when purchasing new appliances now is that most do not come with a power chord; you purchase and install these separately. This was not a hard process, just time consuming.
So all in all, from the before picture to the after, we spent a total of $4,400 on our kitchen remodel. This included the granite countertops, under mounted sink, and all new appliances. We are extremely happy with the results and never thought we could do it for this price. Keep in mind, the initial estimates from the big home improvement stores was approximately $6,000 for just the countertops and we did everything for $1,600 less than that. .
